Bunny has most certain lives up to her name. If you are thinking that means she is a soft and fuzzy sort of girl, you probably ought to know that Bunny’s real name is Bunnicula. Yes, I named her after the fictional vampire rabbit.
Bunny was born raring to go. She was the most vibrant and determined newborn I’ve ever had. She was fighting her way out of the amniotic sac as she was born and was trying to get back to her mother to nurse before I could get her cleaned and dry. Not typical for a newborn Swissy puppy and an indication of just how determined to set her own course she would always be. She was a singleton puppy, so her lack of littermates meant she never really understood the concepts of sharing or cooperation -- and to date has seen no reason to figure them out now that she‘s grown.
Even as a tiny puppy she was feisty & independent and bold as brass.. She was also the most fun puppy ever. Truly. Of all the puppies I‘ve been privileged to help raise, she stands out the one who made it the most fun experience. It was also sometimes a bit hair-raising (hare-raising?) like the time when she was 9 weeks old and scampered away from me to go see the man using a chainsaw to remove a fallen tree in the backyard. Thankfully disaster was averted, but the only one not shaken by the experience was Bunny.
In the show ring Bunny stood out, both because she was a sturdy, solid girl with strong, sound movement and great bone structure, but also because she has a rather Rottie-esque head type. Her markings only enhance the resemblance. Frankly, I think it’s great and I love her look, but I do recognize that her head is not precisely what the standard calls for and not always appreciated by others. Happily, it is a lovely fault to have and one I‘m perfectly happy to look at daily. Like her mother before her, Bunny managed to defeat a champion or two on her way to earning her own Championship. Shown only once or twice at bigger shows after becoming a champion, shortly before her 8th birthday Bunny bounced out of retirement to show locally as a Veteran (the judge didn't think she was nearly as fabulous as the rest of us. Oh well.)
After a couple of misses with a lovely import dog, Bunny finally enjoyed motherhood for the first time at the age of 5-½. She loved having “baby bunnies” and was a great mom. Knowing her second litter would be her last, I bred her to two different dogs. Despite the odds against it, the breedings were successful and in the fall of 2011 she gave me my second dual-sired litter a little over six years after her mother whelped the first one. I loved all the “baby bunnies”, but the original is still ‘the most fun ever’.
Bunny continues to bounce through my life making each day an adventure. Although she usually does what I ask, she always does it her own way.
